INDIANAPOLIS (AP) As the coronavirus sidelines huge numbers of educators, school districts around the country are aggressively recruiting substitute teachers, offering bonuses and waiving certification requirements in order to keep classrooms open.
Coming to the rescue in many cases are college students who are themselves learning online or home for extended winter breaks.
In Indiana, the 4,400-student Greenfield-Central school district about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Indianapolis made a plea for help as its substitute pool shrank. “I said, ’If you’ve got a student who’s in college, maybe they’d like to work even a two-month thing for us - which would be a stopgap, no doubt - but it will help us a whole, whole bunch,” said Scott Kern, the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation director of human resources. ....

Street art, like murals, have always been fixtures in cities as an outlet of expression for local artists across the globe. Such artwork is also presenting numerous destinations with a valuable asset: beacons that can attract large numbers of visitors.
Even in this very abnormal year, mural tours are still being conducted regularly as viable outdoor and socially distanced activities with many of the new works inspired by the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.
“Currently, walking tours are one of the safest things to do because you can keep a good distance from everyone else, wear a mask and be outside,” said Jenny Benson, the co-founder and director of Walking Tours in Scotland. “So, we’re lucky because even in the highest tier of lockdown in Scotland, we can still run our tours.” ....

New project launched to support charities in west Cumbria

A NEW programme aiming to bring benefits and support to charities in west Cumbria has been launched.
Bedrock is a new project from Cumbria Community Foundation and Sellafield, focusing on building the resilience, capabilities and financial sustainability of charities and community organisations in west Cumbria.
Part of the new project is an awards programme, which will provide funding and consultancy support to help develop a number of charities in the area further.
Bedrock will also offer advice and support to the sector, delivered by third sector support network Cumbria CVS.
The project forms part of the initial three-year Transforming West Cumbria social investment initiative, funded through Sellafield Ltd’s social impact multiplied programme. ....
