After plummeting at the onset of the pandemic last year, booming investment earnings have helped push the total value of pension fund assets over $90 billion, officials said Wednesday during a public meeting of the New Jersey State Investment Council.
“The results, obviously, have been very favorable,” investment council chairman Deepak Raj said during the meeting.
The potential record-setting investment performance comes as the state has been ramping up pension contributions in recent years to climb out of a huge hole created by past underfunding. It also comes after Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration resisted calls to short state pension payments amid budget problems that were triggered at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. ....

New Jersey’s public worker pension shortfall continued to grow last year, adding nearly $3 billion in unfunded liabilities to one of the worst-funded systems in the country.
As of July 1, 2020, the seven pension funds that make up the pension system had enough assets to cover just 58% of what they owe to active and retired state and local government workers, according to new Treasury Department reports.
The new data are contained in actuarial valuation reports that act like a report card for the pension funds. It’s based on the state’s statutory accounting rules and takes into account the previous year’s investment gains or losses, changing demographics, contributions being made and checks going out. ....

Bordentown, Medford Lakes voters turn out for May municipal elections


Incumbent Dennis P. O Neill beat out Joseph Aromando 418 votes, or 70% of the total vote, to 170 votes, or 28% of the total vote, according to unofficial results. O Neill was appointed to the seat on the five-member council in February after the January death of borough mayor Robert D. Hanold Sr. 
In New Jersey, nonpartisan elections where candidates are not identified by political party and must be clearly offset from party lines on any ballot  are held in May. 
Only three towns in Burlington County hold them: Bordentown City, Medford Lakes and Bass River.
