Nash-King invites residents to give input on Killeen comprehensive plan


Killeen Mayor Pro Tem Debbie Nash-King hosted a community forum on Thursday at Mr. Gatti’s Pizza with roughly 30 in attendance.
Tony McIlwain, Killeen’s director of development services, and Jeffery Reynolds, director of public works, were both on hand talking potholes, the city’s new comprehensive plan and opening up discussions about what to prioritize in the budget.
“We only have one budget and that will only go so far,” Nash-King said. “I can make a decision for you, but you didn’t vote me in to do that.”
She told the audience she will conduct these meetings every month in hopes of learning where residents want their tax dollars spent and to educate residents on the issues. The one of utmost importance to her right now is the comprehensive plan. ....

Council unanimously approves about $5.8 million for road construction


The Killeen City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve spending nearly $6 million to help improve the current conditions of 12 streets in Killeen.
The item was originally on the consent agenda and was set to be approved along with eight other items. However, at the beginning of the meeting, the item was removed from the consent agenda and became a discussion item.
Councilwoman Mellisa Brown spoke during the discussion about her concerns over possible insurance or a warranty on the road construction.
Jeffery Reynolds, the city’s director of public works, said a warranty or something similar is not typically done for this type of work. ....

Week in review: Streets, recounts, homicides and Fort Hood


The fourth criminal homicide in Killeen this year happened on May 2, police said.
The man who died in the fatal shooting at a Killeen nightclub early May 2 is 28-year-old Michael Dequan Sanders.
Killeen police are still investigating the homicide that occurred around 3:10 a.m. Sunday at Club Legends, 308 S. Second St.
That morning, police were dispatched to the club for a call of a shooting victim.
Officers performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, police said.
Sanders succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:16 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke.
This is the fourth criminal homicide in the city of Killeen this year. ....

KILLEEN, Texas The City of Killeen is still dealing with the lingering effects of the February winter storm. It is so bad, city council members are considering a $5.8 million bid to repair the roads.
