Darwen could be in line for £100m investment boost


A BID for £25million of government cash to transform an East Lancashire town, including restoring its Victorian market and creating new manufacturing and job-creation sites, has been submitted.
The Darwen Town Deal Investment Plan hopes to lever another £75m of private sector and council investment in to boost an improvement blueprint for the next ten years.
The document was this week sent to housing, communities and local government secretary Robert Jenrick.
Proposals include:
restoring the town’s Victorian market, creating a new food hall and ‘makers market’ to attract visitor;
cash for Darwen s library and Library Theatre and improved car parking. ....

PLINTH
… North West sculptors are being asked to submit designs for a piece of art to sit atop a plinth outside Liverpool’s grade two-listed parish church. The winning entry will replace Gail Dooley’s Tidal Shame, which depicts a ceramic gannet entangled by sea plastic and detritus collected on beaches across the UK and Merseyside. The new installation will be unveiled in July and occupy the plinth for 12 months. Bill Addy, chief executive of Liverpool BID Company,
 said: “The Liverpool Plinth is a vital place for us to champion artists across the North of England, in a year when they need more support than ever before.” The application process is now open and will close on Friday 19 March. As well as having their work on display, the selected artist will also receive a £1,000 prize.  ....

Green light for Darwen Tower revamp - what will happen


MAJOR repair and restoration works to Darwen Tower are now set to go ahead subject to the government s final approval.
Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Planning Committee last night voted unanimously to grant the permission needed to be able to carry out the work on the Grade II listed building.
The restoration work will improve the observation decks at the top of the tower, repoint of the building with lime and mortar, repair stonework, re-glaze windows, instal new handrails, and replace rainwater pipes.
The approval was give after Darwen West s Cllr Brian Taylor attended the online meeting to urge fellow councillors to support the improvements to the iconic landmark and preserve it for future generations to enjoy . ....

Spotted in Darwen: The Grinch and his dog - have you seen them?


The Darwen Grinch
The Grinch has been spotted in a town in East Lancashire.
Wearing his trademark red Christmas jacket and walking his dog (we don t know if he s called Max sorry), the Grinch has been photographed out and about in several different locations in Darwen.
Rumoured to have first been sighted on December 15, the avocado-green pot-bellied creature has been delighting residents while on his daily walks, bringing some much-needed festive cheer to the town.
The identity of the Grinch remains a mystery, but it is thought some people have been tagging the person beneath the costume in posts on Facebook. ....
