Thousands at Darwen's Anchor Ground to hear former PM speak

IT WAS Darwen Football Club’s biggest crowd of the inter-war years. More than 12,000 packed the Anchor Ground to see the Welsh Wizard turning on the style. He had everyone in raptures with a dazzling performance that was cheered to the echo.
It was a super spectacle and even the hard-bitten reporters were impressed. “Memorable” said the Darwen News chap. “Impressive,” said the Northern Daily Telegraph man. Praise indeed, considering that the star of the show was 66 years old.
However, the vast crowd that turned up wasn’t there to watch a Lancashire Combination football match, but to listen to David Lloyd-George, former Prime Minister, supporting the Liberal candidate for the 1929 General Election, Sir Herbert Samuel. ....

Darwen skatepark plan to put town on the map approved

THE transformation of a skatepark into an Olympic-level sports village has been approved by unanimously councillors.
The redevelopment of Darwen’s Junction 4 Skatepark with top-class training facilities for skateboarders and BMX riders was praised as wonderful and terrific .
The new urban sports village will include a street skate plaza, dirt jump and pump track, and a BMX course.
Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Planning Committee give it the green light on Thursday night despite two objections from nearby residents
It is one of three early projects which secured a share of a £750,000 government grant from the Darwen Town Deal. ....

Proposals for its extension with top-class training facilities for skateboarders and BMX riders are set for approval by councillors.
They include a street skate plaza, dirt jump and pump track, and a BMX course.
The new ‘Street Skatepark’ would developed round the car park at Darwen’s Junction 4 Skatepark.

Darwen could be in line for £100m investment boost

A BID for £25million of government cash to transform an East Lancashire town, including restoring its Victorian market and creating new manufacturing and job-creation sites, has been submitted.
The Darwen Town Deal Investment Plan hopes to lever another £75m of private sector and council investment in to boost an improvement blueprint for the next ten years.
The document was this week sent to housing, communities and local government secretary Robert Jenrick.
Proposals include:
restoring the town’s Victorian market, creating a new food hall and ‘makers market’ to attract visitor;
cash for Darwen s library and Library Theatre and improved car parking. ....
