Cold weather proves no barrier to Montgomery children


Denice takes part in historic online Plygain event
Plygain services where people come together to celebrate the festive season with traditional carols across Wales had to be different this year because of the pandemic.
Instead of gathering, singers and groups were encouraged to submit a recording of their own performance and these were put together into two films, and shared as virtual Plygain across social media on December 20 and January 3.
One of those taking part was Denice Jaunzens from Montgomery who said: “I had to consider carefully, as you cannot sing a song that someone else has already chosen.
“It was a worthwhile challenge and it’s an honour to play a part in maintaining this tradition as a Welsh learner. I was very grateful to the organisers of the online format. ....

Community service acknowledged at Hancock selectmen’s meeting
HANCOCK — Members of the Hancock Board of Selectmen took time at their Dec. 16 meeting to recognize and listen to reports of community service efforts in the town, including work with the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department and efforts to combat food insecurity at Hancock Grammar School (HGS).
Board Chairman George Colwell presented Chief Chris Holmes with a certificate from the town that acknowledged all the hard work the department does and for being a 2020 recipient of the Spirit of America Award. 
The Spirit of America Award, issued by the Spirit of America Foundation, an organization out of Augusta, honors volunteerism.  ....

Llanidloes drink driver receives 18 month road ban

A LLANIDLOES man has been banned from the roads after admitting to driving with excess alcohol.
Philip John Latham, 43, of Hafren Terrace, Llanidloes pleaded guilty to drink-driving when he appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court.
Anouska Youds, prosecuting, said that shortly after 7pm on November 9, officers on Great Oak Street saw a vehicle reversing into Cambrian Place.
When they went over to speak to Latham they could smell alcohol on his breath and when they asked him to take a breathalyser test, he said he would fail as he had consumed four pints.
A reading was taken at the custody suite and Latham, a self-employed civil engineer, was found to have 65 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35. ....
