Country Music Memories: Jimmy Wayne Begins Meet Me Halfway Walk

Eleven years ago today, on Jan. 1, 2010, singer-songwriter Jimmy Wayne kicked off the new year by starting a 1,700-mile walk, called Meet Me Halfway, to raise awareness about youth aging out of the foster care system.
Wayne first had the idea for the walk in December 2009, while enjoying the comforts of his warm home: This guilty feeling came over me, he recalls. Here I am, living life. I m comfortable. I d been on the Brad Paisley tour for a lot of the year, and I just didn t feel like I d done anything to make a difference.
I got to thinking, Wayne adds, and I said, What if I walk halfway across the country to raise awareness [about youth who age out of the foster care system with nowhere to go]? ....

Lawrence Wayne Sheets, 78, of North Wilkesboro, passed away, Monday, Dec. 28, 2020, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Sheets was born July 6, 1942, in Ashe County to Lillard Vaughn and Maurine Miller Sheets. Mr. Sheets was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Margret Carol Sheets. He liked to mow and garden. He loved helping other people. He was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church.
Mr. Sheets is survived by his wife, Daphene Watts Sheets; son, Jimmy Wayne and wife, Monica Parsons Sheets, of Millers Creek; grandchildren, Brianna Paige Sheets and Michael J. Smith Sheets, both of Millers Creek; brother, Paul Dean Sheets and wife, Carol, of Maryland; sister, Martha Sheets Whittington of Millers Creek; and special great-great-niece, Sarah Robinson. Several nieces and nephews ....
