In new setting, performers take to stage for 2021 Riverhead Idol The backdrop changed, but the performances were just as spectacular as always. Riverhead Idol, a competition for students in the Riverhead School District, returned Saturday evening in a new format to accommodate social distancing in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Eight students performed at Iron Pier Beach in Northville and sophomore Olivia Meyer earned the first place prize after sining “Warrior” by Demi Lovato. Freshman Ava Gradsicher, who sang “Soul Kitchen” by The Doors, received the second place award. Former Riverhead councilman Jim Wooten served as the emcee for the event. ....

The Alabama Department of Education launched a free Summer Learning Challenge this week, offering children in kindergarten through 12th grade online access to hundreds of thousands of books, along with math exercises and online activities. State education officials hope parents and families will use the resources to help students get ready for school in August. “To ensure students are fully prepared for their return to in-classroom learning in 2021-22,” State Superintendent Eric Mackey said in a news release, “we are asking parents and caregivers to consider incorporating fun reading, math, and science skill-building activities into their summer schedules.” ....
