There must have been something in the water in Dunbartonshire in the second half of the 19th Century. Between 1889 and 1897, six footballers with strong connections to the Clydeside town of Dumbarton represented the Toffees. First there was Alex Latta, followed by Richard âDickieâ Boyle, Abe Hartley and the Bell brothers (John and Laurie). But only one, John âJackâ Taylor, would get his hands on silverware whilst associated with the Toffees â albeit after an agonising series of near-misses. One of the true greats of Evertonâs early decades, this moustachioed âJack of all tradesâ remains Evertonâs seventh highest appearance maker in all competitions. ....

Author releases two books about Salem's musical history

Two new books and an accompanying CD that pay tribute to Salem’s musical history recently became available.
The books are “Old Salem at Sea in Ballad and Song” by Robert Strom, with foreword by Daisy Nell, and “Old Salem in Ballad and Song” by Robert Strom, with foreword by Jim McAllister.
In “Old Salem at Sea in Ballad and Song,” there are over 90 ballads and sea songs that entertained sailors in their long hours at sea and sea shanties, sung to “lighten the workload and as a relief from the tedium of hard hauling or pulling the lines and adjusting the sails required to keep the ship working.” ....

Mitch Ryder has recorded more than 25 albums over four decades. He’s a singer and musician and in real life he’s known as William Sherille Levise Jr. Mitch had a gruff, wailing style of singing, complemented by his awesome energy onstage. His first band called Tempest, was formed while he was attending Warren High School, and often played at a club called the village.
Mitch Ryder s next adventure was his band called Billy Lee and the Rivieras, which was the band he was in when they met songwriter and producer Bob Crewe. (You may remember The Bob Crewe Generation with the song Music to Watch Girls By used in a Diet Pepsi Commercial in the 60s) Meeting and working with Bob Crewe changed everything, including their name. They had to drop the Rivieras because there was already a band with that name. So with the help of a phone book, Levise took the stage name of Mitch Ryder, and at that point Mitch Ryder and The Detro ....
