Three members of the Warren city fire department were paid more than $200,000 in 2020, reports Michigan Capitol Confidential, a news site of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Three other fire department employees were each paid more than $190,000 in 2020.
Mayor Jim Fouts said the high pay came from overtime pay rates incurred due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Fouts said the city has agreed to minimum-staffing requirements in the fire department union contract. The clause requires the city to maintain a certain level of staffing at all times. ....

City officials are working to address the issue before it creates a fiscal disaster.
As Michigan’s third largest city, Warren has six fire stations to help protect more than 40,000 residential housing units.
According to latest statistics, the Warren Fire Department respond to about 15,000 calls and between 3,000 to 4,000 fires a year. Last year, however, the department staff was affected due to COVID. To make the minimum staffing levels, overtime was offered starting with those with the most seniority. ....

WARREN A lawsuit over matters ranging from access to city contracts and legal opinions to the current budget, the tax rate and appointed positions in the mayor’s office has been settled by a unanimous vote of the Warren City Council.
But even after the vote on Jan. 26, sources said it remained unclear whether the terms would be met as agreed in the settlement between Mayor Jim Fouts and members of the council, who filed the lawsuit last summer.
“Unfortunately, we had to file a lawsuit to protect the charter and the integrity of the tax and budget process,” Warren City Council Secretary Mindy Moore said at the meeting, where the settlement was considered and adopted after it was added to the agenda that evening. “If we did not file this lawsuit, we would have incorrect tax bills, an incorrect city budget and this council would not have access to important city documents and records.” ....
