Tarentum awards contract to demolish fire-damaged home on Lock Street

Tarentum Council has awarded a contract to tear down what remains of one of two Lock Street homes destroyed by fire on Feb. 15.
Investigators ruled that the accidental fire started after a pot of food had been left on a stove with a burner in the “on” position. The fire started at 208 Lock St. and spread to neighboring 204 Lock St.
The Lott family home at 208 Lock St. was insured, and the insurance company is handling its demolition, according to borough officials. ....

A soft opening is planned this spring for the $1.5 million Babcock Nature Center in Buffalo Township, under construction off Monroe Road next to the Butler-Freeport Community Trail.
A collaboration between the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and Buffalo Township, the new 2,500-square-foot center and a 1,200-square-foot pavilion will offer programming, restrooms, refreshments, food, trail parking and more. Audubon plans to work on educational opportunities at the center and its environs with local districts and residents, as well. ....

Pittsburgh bald eagles lay 1st egg of 2021; marks 9th year nesting on Hays hillside

The Pittsburgh Hays female bald eagle laid her first egg of the season Friday evening.
A live nest cam captured the egg for the first time shortly before 6 p.m.
The female eagle returned to the nest just before 5 p.m., then ate “a food gift brought by the Hays male” eagle prior to laying the egg, reports PixCams, which operates the video feed in partnership with the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania.
The pair typically rears one to two chicks each year. Several eggs typically get laid sequentially about two to three days apart, then incubate for 35 days before they begin to hatch. While incubating, the adult eagles will take turns keeping the nest “constantly” attended, the Audubon Society reports. ....
