A Hempfield man is accused by state police of driving drunk during a March crash that left another motorist with an ankle injury requiring three surgeries, according to court papers. Nicholas John Decaro, 26, was arrested Monday. He is free on $20,000 unsecured bond. Troopers responded to Edna Road in Hempfield just after 2 a.m. March 27 for a report of a two-vehicle crash with entrapment. James reversed the decision of the borough’s Zoning Hearing Board denying a permit application by America First Enterprises, doing business as Oliver Outdoor, to erect the billboard beside the bridge. ....

An Avonmore woman is accused by police of stealing $54,000 from the borough’s general fund to pay personal bills when she worked as secretary for the municipality, according to Westmoreland County detectives. Rebecca E. Steele, 45, was arrested Thursday on felony charges of theft, receiving stolen property and tampering with evidence. Detectives were notified in November 2019 after audits for 2017 and 2018 showed money was electronically being taken out of the borough’s general fund account for Steele’s personal bills, according to court papers. Steele was then suspended from her job. ....

Tarentum Council has awarded a contract to tear down what remains of one of two Lock Street homes destroyed by fire on Feb. 15. Investigators ruled that the accidental fire started after a pot of food had been left on a stove with a burner in the “on” position. The fire started at 208 Lock St. and spread to neighboring 204 Lock St. The Lott family home at 208 Lock St. was insured, and the insurance company is handling its demolition, according to borough officials. ....
