A pair of bills would ease restrictions on dental care by allowing training hygienists to do routine procedures without the presence of a dentist, particularly at schools. Hygienists could, for example, administer local anesthetics, under supervision, and perform dental hygiene at schools, without a dentist. Senate Bill 146 won unanimous approval from senators on March 31. The House version, House Bill 144, passed 113-1 on Thursday, May 6. Rep. Abe Jones, D-Wake, cast the lone dissenting vote. Lawmakers will now likely decide which bill to use for the final version that will head ultimately to the governor. The bills are similar, and each includes a provision for teledentistry: in other words, meeting with a patient online to cull data, record symptoms, and make assessments, for example. ....
This Date in Baseball-Week Ahead By The Associated PressMay 6, 2021 GMT May 7 1917 Babe Ruth of the Red Sox allowed two hits as he outdueled Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators 1-0. The Senate is close to approving a trio of health care bills aimed at reducing costs and increasing transparency in the system. The bills would help curb surprise billing and ease restrictive laws that prevent health care companies from increasing supply. But they fall short of more substantial changes some policy experts have pushed. “Health care costs just keep eating up more and more of a family’s budget,” said Sen. Joyce Krawiec, R-Forsyth, a sponsor of each bill. “It’s unsustainable, and it’s holding back economic growth in North Carolina.” Senate Bill 505 would require hospitals to tell their patients if any of the providers that might take part of their care are out of network for their insurance. This would prevent surprisingly high bills after a procedure. Under current law, a person could go in for a knee surgery at an in-network hospital and only later find out the anesthesiologist was out-of-network, when he gets a large bill for that servic ....
The Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the country could see a sharp decline in virus cases by July. The state Senate approved a bipartisan bill Wednesday that secures visitation for hospital patients and long-term care residents during a state public-health emergency. Senate Bill 191, titled âThe No Patient Left Alone Act,â cleared the Senate by a 40-9 vote. Among its primary sponsors is Sen. Joyce Krawiec, R-Forsyth. SB191 would secure a patientâs right to have a designated visitor during a declared disaster or public-health emergency, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill affects hospitals, nursing homes, Hospice care, residential treatment facilities and other long-term care facilities. ....
It may not be well known that Rep. Jason Saine (R) of Lincoln County was once a firefighter. Between 2004 and 2011, he served as a volunteer firefighter for the East Lincoln Fire Department. Heâs still on the roster and said that one day, he may go back to it. He has a bachelorâs degree in fire science. His training as a firefighter gives him the tools he needs to put out fires in congress. âWhile I was campaigning in early 2004, the East Lincoln Fire Department was a precedent location,â he said. âI got talking to some of the guys and later on that year, talked more to them. They asked me to help them with some of their press releases, they didnât have any background in that.â ....
