By Jim Stafford, for The Oklahoman David Hill was elected to serve as the principal chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation in December 2019. In this conversation, he addresses economic development and economic issues that are important to the tribe. Q: What are the areas of business development your tribe is focusing on for the future? A: The Muscogee Nation will be focusing on many different areas in the future. We intend on expanding our current operations and looking at opportunities in property management and specialty trades. We are also nearing completion of a meat processing facility in Glenpool. This facility will promote long-term stability in food sovereignty and security. The USDA inspected facility is expected to employ up to 25 people and offer meat processing and retail meats to the public, as well as the tribe. ....
Jim Stafford Special to Oklahoman Bill Anoatubby has been governor of the Chickasaw Nation since 1987 and has overseen exponential growth of the tribe’s employment and business interests. In 1987 the tribe had about 250 employees. Today, the Chickasaw Nation employs almost 13,000 people. Gov. Anoatubby took time to answer these questions about the tribe’s economic development efforts. Q: What are the areas of business development your tribe is focusing on for the future? A: We plan to continue investing in our entertainment, hospitality and tourism businesses which have proven very successful over the years. We are also continuing to diversify our business portfolio. Chickasaw Community Bank and Chickasaw Nation Industries provide examples of that diversification. Chickasaw Nation Industries focuses on government contracting, engineering, manufacturing and telecommunications support. We are also investing in a number of commercial health care ventures. ....

A: Choctaw Nation currently operates travel plazas, country markets (grocery stores), casinos, restaurants franchises, a printing company, hotels, RV park, manufacturing operation and cattle ranches. We continue to assess needs to expand in our core businesses, as well as our value chain. ....
Commercial Radio was the ‘gold rush’ of the late 1980s, and everyone and anyone wanted a piece of the action. There were rock stars, impresarios, lawyers, sportsmen, public relations gurus, stockbrokers and socialites, all prospecting for a licence to print money. These licences, awarded by the Independent Radio & Television Commission (IRTC), were cheap and they held the promise of easy money for the influential, the fortune and the favoured. The reality turned out to be a little different. The road to radio riches was eventually littered with casualties, but only after the initial euphoria had worn off. The way it worked was that the ‘movers and shakers’ formed themselves into competing groups, appeared before hearings in the National Concert Hall in Dublin and eventually the licences were doled out. If you weren’t involved you weren’t really a player in the Dublin financial/entertainment scene of the time. ....
