That was the question on my mind during the Big Ten’s on-and-off-and-on indecisiveness regarding this pandemic-ravaged season.
The problem, I thought, was not with Kevin Warren. Rather, it was with the Big Ten chancellors and presidents who made the decisions.
And then, the question became WWJPHD? What would Jim Phillips have done?
When Phillips, the perfect and obvious choice to succeed the retiring Delany, left Northwestern, where he was an elite athlete director in every way, to become ACC commissioner last week, it became clear how big a price the Big Ten was paying for overlooking Phillips (above right, with Pat Fitzgerald). ....

1. Someone here did an analysis of strength of schedule between OSU and Michigan since, what, 1990 or something? The difficulty in Michigan s schedule is striking. Yes, some of that is self-inflicted, but since the conference went to divisions, Michigan has been given significantly harder cross-division games than OSU by the conference schedulers. Had 2020 played out, Michigan would have had to play Wisconsin, Iowa, and an assumed-to-be-good-beforehand Minnesota as cross-division games.
2. Someone did an analysis here about penalties (I think it was holding calls, both on our OL and calls not made on opposing OLs) and found a significant disparity disfavoring Michigan against virtually all other teams in the conference. ....

The Atlantic Coast Conference hired Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips on Monday to be the leagueâs next commissioner, replacing the retiring John Swofford.
Phillips has been Northwesternâs AD since 2008, leading the athletic department through a period of success in competition and growth in facilities. During his tenure the Wildcats have been to nine bowl games and won Big Ten division titles in football; the menâs basketball team made its first NCAA tournament appearance; and womenâs lacrosse won three national titles.
Phillips oversaw the funding and development of Northwesternâs $270 million Walter Athletics Center and Ryan Fieldhouse indoor practice facility located on Lake Michiganâs shores. ....
