A march demanding distribution of $900 checks to the UC Santa Barbara student body was held on the afternoon of May 8, organized by the Young Democratic Socialists of America, a UC Santa Barbara student organization. The protesters began marching from the Storke Tower to Chancellor Yang’s residence in the southeastern corner of campus at around 2:30 p.m., weaving banners and chanting slogans along the way. As the crowd arrived at Yang’s house, several speakers expressed their frustrations over the lack of university-provided support for students during the pandemic. The protest ended with the protestors chalking the driveway to the residence with slogans such as, “Power to the Students” and “$900 now.” ....

The UC Santa Barbara student organization Young Democratic Socialists of America held a march on May 8 to demand that the university distribute $900 COVID-19 relief checks to all students.

The group of approximately 40 students and community organizers began their 2 p.m. march at Storke Tower before walking to Chancellor Henry T. Yang’s house, where Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) leadership, students and community participants gave speeches on their demands for the university in front of his home.  ....

IVRPD Votes To Reintroduce Proposal To Remove Houseless Residents From People's Park

At its March 25 meeting, the Isla Vista Recreation & Park District board of directors voted to reintroduce a proposal to return People’s Park, the only remaining park in Isla Vista available for houseless residents to legally reside in, back to its recreational capacity. All houseless residents would have to relocate as a result. 
After being offered People’s Park as a relocation space when IVRPD cleared out Anisq’Oyo’ Park, houseless residents face the possibility of another relocation.

The proposal is currently being worked on. The board did not say when they would bring back the proposal to vote on it.   ....
