The new year hasn’t been knocking us flat with good news, but the announcement this week that the Kino Klassika Foundation is launching a new streaming service in February is something film fans will want to put their arms around. The current streaming landscape isn’t hot on Russian cinema, but Klassiki promises to offer UK audiences a permanent library of 60 titles from Russia and the Caucasus, including both classics and more obscure gems. The initiative has come about because of the large audiences that have been drawn to the free weekly films being posted on the foundation’s website during lockdown. Those are still happening, so you can get a taste of the kind of thing Klassiki will be hosting by viewing this week’s offering, which just happens to be one of the great Soviet-era films: Sergei Parajanov’s The Colour of Pomegranates. Dee revisits his days as a chef at the Ritz (he lied his way into the short-lived job) and shares memories of family camping holidays in France as a child, with the hosts tracking down the campsite his family stayed at and recreating the effect of a perfect rotisserie chicken, but in a domestic oven. From the day his third novel,
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, was published in 1963, John le Carré realised that he was to be branded “the spy turned writer, rather than a writer who, like scores of his kind, had done a stint in the secret world, and written about it.” Le Carré, a mask for David Cornwell, had worked for the British Secret Intelligence Service, known as MI6, in the 1960s.
