In Whanganui District Council discussions George Maxwell has been described as probably not the nicest guy. Whether he was or not it s indisputable that he played a prominent part in an infamous event. Just over 150 years later the district named after him is on course to revert to its earlier name of Pakaraka.
So who was Maxwell and how did it come to this? He was born in Alloa, Scotland, and arrived as a young boy in Wellington in March 1852 on the Agra with his parents John and Catherine Maxwell.
Electronic pop artist and musician Sophie Xeon, popularly known as just Sophie, has died. She was 34. Tragically our beautiful Sophie passed away this morning after a terrible accident, the artist s family said an emailed statement provided by Sophie s representative, Ludovica Ludinatrice. True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell. She will always be here with us. The family thank everyone for their love and support and request privacy at this devastating time.
A police spokesperson in Athens, Greece, confirmed that Sophie slipped and fell from the balcony of an apartment where she was staying and no foul play was suspected in her death.

Glance to the south from the Redwood Creek Overlook and know that Hyperion is somewhere out there.Ashley Harrell
Hyperion, the world s tallest tree, is bigger than both the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben. Our CA Parks editor, Ashley Harrell, made the trip to take a look. She doesn t recommend it - it’s impossible to tell from the ground which tree is the tallest.
The trek there, writes Harrell, is not only a pain in the ass but also involves damaging the tree’s habitat, all for a negligible payoff.
