Our national recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic depends perhaps more than anything else on a nationwide vaccination campaign that will have to be bigger, faster and more comprehensive than any previous public health initiative in our history.
Which is to say it’s going to be complicated. President Joe Biden has pledged to administer 100 million shots in his first 100 days, a lofty goal that even if met will still cover just a fraction of Americans. It’s already run into problems: States got off to a sluggish start in December amid fewer-than-expected doses and confusion over their allotments; the federal plan to prioritize health care workers and elderly populations broke down in practice; and news reports suggesting states were hoarding doses generated bad press. Meanwhile, the health care system is quite literally racing against time, trying to get a critical mass ....

The Empire Strikes Back | Sathnam Sanghera’s Empireland: How Imperialism Has Shaped Modern Britain
Sathnam Sanghera’s Empireland: How Imperialism Has Shaped Modern Britain peers through a fog of amnesia and nostalgia to investigate how colonialism made Britain what it is today.

In the main building of the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office in Whitehall is a marble-floored plaza formerly known as the Grand Durbar Court of the India Office. It’s flanked by artefacts of the British empire, among them a painting by Spiridione Roma entitled
The East Offering its Riches to Britannia.
Originally commissioned in 1778 by the East India Company, this depicts a dark-skinned character representing India holding up her treasures to fair Britannia. China and Indonesia await their turn, among others, while a John Company vessel laden with the riches of the East is visible on the horizon. ....

Several Compelling Realities: An Interview with Jon Sealy

Eleanor J. Bader talks with Jon Sealy about his third novel,
The Merciful, as well as morality, ethics, the state of Southern literature, the business of publishing, and the pandemic.
Everyone in the small, picturesque town of Overlook, South Carolina, has an opinion about the death of nineteen-year-old college student Samantha James. After all, although the facts seem straightforward Samantha was on her bicycle, pedaling along a dark, but familiar, country road to meet her boyfriend, when she was hit by a car driven by Daniel Hayward there are a slew of questions about what she was doing out so late. Hayward, too, is the subject of debate, and people disagree about whether he should be charged with vehicular homicide or murder. ....

Sathnam Sanghera s new book Empireland is an eye-opening history – but it buys into a misleading Brexit myth

Telegraph readers might be inclined to overlook Empireland because it’s praised on the cover by Lefty shock jock James O’Brien (death by endorsement) but, trust me, it’s better than that. The subject is timely. With statues being tossed in rivers and the National Trust accused of going woke, it feels as if the Right regards the past as the repository of civilisation and the Left sees it as a closet packed with skeletons of dead racists, but the reality of the British Empire, says Sathnam Sanghera, was infinitely more complex. ....
