The livestream event honors Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and includes a special dedication to the women who were killed in the Atlanta, Georgia spa shootings in March.
At Flushing Town Hall, we are responding to the recent rise in hate crimes as best we know how through the arts, says Ellen Kodadek, Executive & Artistic Director. Our mission is to bring people together by presenting arts and culture from around the world. The Atlanta killings were widely understood to be driven by racism and misogyny. United States vs Billie Holiday (Warner Bros): “Cassandra Monique Batie (born December 30, 1984), known professionally as Andra Day, is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. In 2015, she released her debut album, Cheers to the Fall. At the 2016 Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for Best R&B Album and the single, “Rise Up”, was nominated for Best R&B Performance. To promote “Rise Up”, she performed the song on The View, the performance earned her a Daytime Emmy Award nomination. Day also appeared alongside Stevie Wonder, who is partially credited for her discovery, in an ad for Apple TV in late 2015. In 2021, she portrayed Billie Holiday in the biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday, for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Trio Access is a new jazz ensemble showcasing the compositional and improvisational talents of members Luke Drohan (piano), James Lockwood (contrabass guitar & upright bass) and Paul Whitwood (percussion), joined by special guest Dean Kalait.
Collaboratively led, Access explores the unique timbral, harmonic and musical possibilities created by the combination of piano, contrabass guitar and percussion, creating dynamic, ensemble-led performances built from the musical contributions of each member.
Influenced by figures from throughout the jazz world (Joe Henderson, Keith Jarrett, Michel Petrucciani, John Abercrombie) and beyond (Ravel, Michel Camilo, Bela Bartok) Access features the compositions of each of its members, emphasising collaborative improvisation to explore the unique harmonic and musical opportunities of original repertoire, as well as contemporary arrangements of jazz, bebop and post-bop materia ....

Black Butterfly was written by Duke Ellington & Irving Mills and Brad Mehldau’s piano playing would make Duke proud on this one. It’s delicate and tasteful, reflective and intentional. Lloyd floats with a tender restraint throughout.
