Thu Apr 22 2021 | Ella Brockway | College PHOTO BY JOHN STROHSACKER Even over 48 hours after the final whistle blew in Johns Hopkins’ win over Penn State, Janine Tucker’s cheeks still hurt from how much time she’d spent smiling in the last few days. The Blue Jays’ 13-11 upset of the then-No. 13 Nittany Lions on April 18 was the 300th win of Tucker’s career, granting her entrance into a club that only eight others in NCAA Division I history have joined. It was a moment 28 years in the making. Here s a breakdown of Sunday s action: Unpacking the Pac-12 weekend. Out west, Stanford (8-0) returned to action this weekend and claimed the Pac-12 regular season championship with wins over Arizona State, 22-21, in overtime and USC, 16-15, in nail-biting fashion. No. 8 Maryland women’s lacrosse vs Johns Hopkins preview Share this story Photo courtesy of Maryland Athletics An impressive weekend sweep of Michigan has brought the No. 8 Maryland women’s lacrosse team over .500. After 12 days off, head coach Cathy Reese and company will make a pivot to Baltimore to go up against Johns Hopkins on Friday. “It was a good opportunity to reset after playing two games in a week,” Brindi Griffin said. “Our bodies had time to recover both physically and mentally . [We’re] getting better each day and we’re really excited to play them.” A pair of much needed wins against the Wolverines was spearheaded by a career-high seven goals from sophomore Hannah Leubecker in the opening leg. The second half was played in constant rain, and despite multiple scoreless droughts from the Terps, they were able to edge the opposition to complete the sweep. ....
Friday February 26th, 2021 11:00am (Photo Courtesy: Michigan Athletics) The Big Ten always has one of the most challenging schedules in the country. Northwestern and Maryland have combined for 10 national titles during their runs as Big Ten-affiliated programs. Only the ACC has more (15, but 11 are Maryland’s; the Terps played in the ACC until 2014). This year, COVID has thrown Big Ten programs another curveball: they’re only playing each other, often twice in a weekend. Friday-Sunday series between Big Ten schools begin this weekend. The conference announced its decision and schedule in early February, and it didn’t take long for Michigan head coach Hannah Nielsen to embrace it. ....
