Coast band in line for major music award

Fragile Animals opening the Big Pineapple Music Festival in 2018.   To-date they ve released a couple of EPs and some stand-alone singles, but that could soon change, having spent the best part of the past year writing songs in lieu of being able to perform. Drummer Kyle Shipton, 25, grew up on the Coast, while Ms Jenkins and her partner, guitarist Daniel Parkinson, 34, both moved to the region from New South Wales after they d finished their schooling. Ms Jenkins said the band had gathered momentum at the start of last year, having released a song, played a support gig and had a tour booked before the pandemic dashed those plans.

SCOTLAND SUPPLEMENT III - Separatism, federalism, centralism

SCOTLAND SUPPLEMENT III - Separatism, federalism, centralism Breaking apart existing states is not the road to socialism, but the road to defeat, writes Jack Conrad Those who rigidly adhere to a moralistic, third-worldist anti-imperialism cannot possibly bring themselves to countenance self-determination for ‘unworthy’ peoples - the most obvious example being Israeli Jews and the British-Irish in the six counties of Northern Ireland. 1 Given its junior role in building, administering and maintaining what was a vast British empire, that must include Scotland too. After all, historically, even “left-of centre” 2 Scottish nationalists sought not an end to that empire, but, as a “mother nation”, equal rights with England to plunder and profit.

While the content matter may seem a little bleak, the danceable melodies inspired by Brit-pop, late ’90s and early ’00s alt-rock and indie-pop makes for existentialism you can dance to – or contemplative disco, if you will. The sonic backdrop is like a big, warm hug that promises it will all be okay, even if the lyrics tell a different story. The clever, reflective songwriting featured across
