Running back Charlie Smith was a homegrown Oakland Raider.
The 6-foot, 205-pound Smith was a football and track star at Castlemont High School in Oakland before going to the University of Utah.
The Raiders selected Smith in the fourth round (No. 110 overall) of the 1968 NFL Draft and he basically replaced dual-threat running back Clem Daniels, whose career was cut short by a knee injury sustained in 1967.

The Jets sans Sonny plus the Heidi game

Lillis and Hess were the driving force behind forcing Sonny out or buying him out. The Jets you see were becoming very successful on the field and in attendance, yet showed no profit. They wanted to both reap the financial rewards of that event and be removed from the overspending Sonny was planning.

Jeff Richardson discovered there are worse things than catching the attention of a prospective boss when you re playing in The Game of the Century.
When top-ranked Notre Dame and second-ranked Michigan State met in November 1966, Jets owner Sonny Werblin was at the game to take a look at Michigan State s defensive line. Sonny came to see (defensive end) Bubba Smith in action, and during the game, I made 16 unassisted tackles, said Richardson, a defensive tackle for the Spartans. And every time Bubba slowed down, you could see it in the huddle that I was grabbing him and trying to get him fired up. And Sonny said, I think I want the guy that fires Bubba up. Not Bubba.

On Tuesday, Jan. 19, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Board of Selectors met virtually to debate and then vote for the men who will make up the Class of 2021, and the results of that day-long session are to be announced this Saturday, the night before Super Bowl LV, during the broadcast of the NFL Honors Show on CBS.
One of the items of business was a yay or nay vote on Bill Nunn in the Hall of Fame s Contributor category. A bylaws change to the selection process was instituted in August 2014 by which a Contributor – defined as an individual who has made outstanding contributions to professional football in capacities other than playing or coaching – will automatically be included among the annual list of finalists for election.
