Zenit holds off depleted Zvezda in a thriller
Kevin Pangos netted a career-high 25 points, including a game-winning three-pointer with 27 seconds to go, to give Zenit St Petersburg a hard-fought 75-76 win over Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Friday night in the Serbian capital. In a battle that went down to the wire, Zenit snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 14-9, while Zvezda dropped to 7-17 on the season. Zenit led by as many as 15 points in the first half, and held a double-digit lead late in the third quarter, but Zvezda rallied behind Ognjen Dobric and Dejan Davidovac. The teams traded leads the rest of the way, before Pangos hit a second-chance triple after Mateusz Ponitka s offensive rebound, lifting Zenit to an important win. Pangos finished with 25 points on 5-for-6 three-point shooting and 7 assists, and was the only Zenit double-digit scorer. After getting snowed out of the Spanish capital last week, Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade returned on Monday for its rescheduled Round 19 game with mighty Real Madrid and proceeded to play what is arguably its best game all season.
Without leading scorer Jordan Loyd or starting point guard Langston Hall, Zvezda put on a defensive masterpiece in taming the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague s best home-court offense for a 77-79 road win. That was almost 10 points below Real s league-leading 86.7 points at the WiZink Center coming into Monday night.
Perhaps the least surprised person at WiZink on Monday was the losing coach, Pablo Laso, who remembered before the game Zvezda s last appearance there, an 83-87 victory back in December 2017 against that season s eventual champions. That time, Zvezda set its own club record in the EuroLeague with 17 three-pointers made.
Round 19 on Monday: Zvezda stuns host Real, 77-79
After waiting almost a week to get there, Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade ambushed Real Madrid in the Spanish capital for a much-needed 77-79 road victory on Monday in a Round 19 game that had been rescheduled due to a snowstorm. Zvezda raised its record to 7-13 by breaking a four-game losing streak away from home, while Madrid fell to 13-7 and missed the chance to tie FC Barcelona in second place. Corey Walden scored 16 of his 18 points as Zvezda established consistent leads in the first half. Ognjen Dobric followed him with 13 points, while Duop Reath scored 10, but the big star for Zvezda was a defense that let no Real player surpass the 11 points that Rudy Fernandez scored off the bench. Nicolas Laprovittola, Gabriel Deck, Trey Thompkins and Jeffery Taylor each added 10 points for the hosts.
