Ever since the first exhibition game that went awry against Nigeria, the US’s sheen of invincibility had vanished. That fact was on full display in their opening match against France. The Frenchmen, led by one NBA All-Star in Rudy Gobert, two decent veterans in Nicolas Batum and Evan Fournier, and two young reserves in Frank Ntilikina and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, vastly outplayed Team USA to closeout the contest and win, 83-76. On paper, it’s definitely puzzling for a Team USA full of superstars like Damian Lillard to succumb to an opponent that arguably doesn’t have any beyond a defensive-minded Gobert. The Yankees officially announced yesterday that both Corey Kluber and Luke Voit were headed to the injured list after an MRI revealed that Kluber, who was pulled out of the game Tuesday night, has a a strained subscapularis muscle in his right shoulder. With four weeks of rest and four weeks of rehab starts likely in his future, Yankees fans should not expect to see him on the mound again until August, so cue the “Corey Kluber and Luis Severino are our trade deadline acquisitions” comments from Brian Cashman. Voit, meanwhile, is dealing with a Grade 2 oblique strain. ....
Lady Eagles keep on winning The Purdy softball team (22-1) added five more wins to its resume in the last week, besting Exeter, Lamar, Lincoln, Sweet Springs and Spokane, outscoring the quartet of opponents 58-1. In an 18-0 win over Exeter on April 21, Robyn Schad and Lauren Schallert led in hits with 3 each. Schallert and Jessi Hoppes tallied 3 RBI each. Schallert also pitched all five innings, striking out 10. She followed up that performance with a no-hitter against Lamar on Friday and a 2-0 win. Schad has 2 hits, and she and Annabelle Bowman each knocked a RBI. Schallert went all seven innings and retired 14 batters. A doubleheader Saturday saw the Lady Eagles top Lincoln, 2-0, and Sweet Springs, 20-1. against Lincoln, Schallert managed 2 hits and Dally Craig added a RBI. Schallert again went all seven innings, striking out 9. Hoppes led the charge against Sweet Springs with a 6-RBI showing on 3 hits. Schad also tallied 3 hits and 5 RBI.
