Hannah Gilbert had three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs, but the Valley Storm 14U softball team fell one run short in the title game of the Coaches Classic on Sunday.
The Storm fell to CT Diamond Club, 9-8, in the championship game played Sunday at Murphy Park.
Margarette Howland and Delaney Fifield each had two hits in the title game for the Storm, and Maggie Fay drove in a pair of runs.
The Valley Storm got into Sunday’s final thanks to a 19-4 win over the Vermont Storm in the quarterfinal round and a 7-5 win over the NEK Tri-Force in the semis. ....

Charged up! Electric bike expansion considered for Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. With the rising popularity of e-bikes, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has released a new proposal that would build new trails and expand access on existing trails.
Forest Service officials are weeding through hundreds of comments and discovering they are split down the middle. Half the people approve, half don’t.
The Basin Wide Trails Analysis proposal aims to improve overall trail accessibility and improve user experience.
“We have proposed three new trailheads in the proposal month,” said Jacob Quinn, one of LTBMU project leads. “Some of that is designed to address congestion at existing parking areas, but the other thing that we’re trying to do is to put public access points on public land. So discourage people parking in the back of neighborhoods to access trail systems; to actually put them on public land in appropriate locations.” ....

Expanded trail access proposed for electric bikes at Tahoe

RENO, Nev.
The U.S. Forest Service is proposing a five-fold increase in the number of miles of trails open to certain electric bikes in the forests surrounding Lake Tahoe.
The proposal by the service’s Lake Basin Management Unit covering parts of six counties in California and Nevada would add 120 miles (193 kilometers) to the current 25 that allow such access, not including dirt roads, among the total 385 miles (619 km) of trails.
“This project is our effort at being proactive and managing e-bikes,” said Jacob Quinn, engineering technician for the unit.
Many of the public comments they’ve received are from users who are older or with various levels of mobility who say e-bikes have allowed them to continue recreating as their mobility has changed, he told the Reno Gazette Journal. A final decision should be made by the end of the year. ....
