Since then, experts have studied the event and have learned a lot.
In 2012, ABC7 s David Ono traveled to Japan and met Kenji Saito, whose bakery in Ofunato was annihilated by the tsunami.
The shaking prompted by the magnitude 9.0 quake went on for minutes. Saito knew a tsunami was coming, so he ran to a hillside and recorded what he saw crackling lumber and rushing water.
In the video, you can hear Saito crying. Everything was gone, but it wasn t just Ofunato. The terrible scene played out in cities across Japan.
In a panel discussion put on by Japan House and Love to Nippon this week, renowned seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones and other experts discussed what we ve learned over the past 10 years. ....

Japan will today observe the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, tsunami and triple nuclear meltdown in which almost 16,000 were killed and hundreds of thousands made homeless. The magnitude 9.0 earthquake was one of the most powerful ever recorded. It triggered tsunami waves up to 40.5 meters high that travelled at 700km/h and surged up to 10km inland destroying entire towns. It moved Japan’s main island of Honshu 2.4m east, shifted the Earth on its axis by estimates of between 10cm and 25cm and increased the ....

How is life getting back to normal in Fukushima 10 years after the disaster?

In March 2011, 88 000 people lived in the Fukushima Prefecture before an extremely powerful tsunami struck the region, destroying much of the area and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
The last 10 years have been spent decontaminating and decommissioning the plant. There are also many more years of work ahead. Today, 14 000 people live in the reopened areas and the zones that are out of bounds continue to get smaller. Okuma is a new district and construction work there is ongoing despite the pandemic.
Buildings have been decontaminated, polluted land has been evacuated or covered with healthy soil. According to experts, radioactivity can only be found on the site of the former power plant, but elsewhere in the region, there is no more radioactivity than in any of the world s major world capitals. ....
