Local student's backpack drive ends with summer Staples party

After launching a Backpack Giveback for students in San Diego who struggle to afford school supplies, a middle school student at St. James Academy is partnering with Staples in Solana Beach for a Summer Weekend Party on Aug. 13-15, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
“Kids are coming in from the Boys & Girls Club and they can decorate their own backpacks,” said Kalia Roper, who has also raised more than $1,000 on GoFundMe.
In addition, the event will feature school supply discounts, music, food and crafts.
Kalia started the initiative after finding eight old backpacks in her attic and learning that many families struggled to afford school supplies. So far, she has collected about 300 used donations and some new, including 40 new backpacks from the brand O’Neill, through Hansen’s in Encinitas. ....

The Directors of the Friends of the Solana Beach Library recently announced the winners of the 2021 Friends Scholarships for education beyond the high school level. Five of this year’s six winners of the $1,000 scholarships were seniors from Torrey Pines High School (TPHS), and the sixth was homeschooled. All of them were supported by outstanding letters of recommendation from their teachers and others. And all showed determination and resourcefulness in dealing with the challenges of applying during COVID-19 restrictions.

Student wins $20K Coca-Cola scholarship
Pacific Ridge School senior Nick Simpson has been named a 2021 Coca-Cola Scholar, receiving a $20,000 college scholarship. He was among 150 high school seniors chosen from an initial pool of nearly 100,000 applicants nationwide. As a member of the 33rd class of Coca-Cola Scholars, Nick exemplifies superior leadership, service and academics. He was also one of five Scholars this year chosen to receive a surprise celebration from the foundation. After volleyball practice, Nick was met with a Coca-Cola truck emblazoned with his name, the official Coca-Cola Bear mascot, a giant check for $20,000 and family members and faculty. The Coca-Cola Scholars Program is a joint effort of Coca-Cola bottlers across the country and The Coca Cola Company. With the 2021 class, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation will have provided more than $75 million in scholarships over 33 years. ....

The Friends of the Solana Beach Library will be awarding at least three $1,000 scholarships for higher education this year to graduating high-school seniors, continuing students, or students returning to school after a gap. To qualify for a 2021 Friends Scholarship, an applicant must live within the city limits of Solana Beach.

Each scholarship is a one-time award to be used for education within the United States at a community college, a four-year college or university, a graduate/professional school or a technical/vocational/career school. The scholarship money may be used for tuition, books, fees, room and board, or other related educational expenses. ....
