There are villages that had 200 to 300 cases. The reasons for the spread may be many - those who were employed in other cities and towns returned to the villages when the lockdown was announced and some of them were COVID-19 positive; there is no control of people visiting houses to supply milk or vegetables; and there are crowds in front of PDS outlets, banks, etc. The public, too, are aware of the need to be careful, but are not alert in following the precautions. They still go out for condolences and at least two or three people test positive. In some places, the cases have reduced in the last two days, say sources. ....

Coimbatore: Police on Tuesday seized 2,610kg banned tobacco products from Annur and Somanur, and arrested four men in connection with the case. Acting on a tip-off, the Annur police raided a warehouse on Sathi Road and seized 910kg banned tobacco products worth Rs 4 lakh from D Immanuvel, 53, of Annur. Police also arrested V Boopalan, 52, of Annur, the owner of the warehouse. Inquiry revealed that they had sourced the contraband from Thanaram of Somanur. Subsequently, the police team, along with Karumathampatti police personnel, raided a rented building at Somanur and seized 1,700kg of banned tobacco products worth Rs 7 lakh from P Thanaram, 20, a native of Rajasthan. Police seized Rs 68,050 from the house and also arrested K Nandha Kumar, 46, of Somanur, who owns the building. ....

They seized around 910 kg of the banned tobacco products worth Rs 4 lakh from the warehouse on the Annur - Sathi Main Road and nabbed D Immanuvel, 53, who had taken the premises on rent. The police also arrested warehouse owner V Boopalan, 52, for allowing illegal activities on the premises. During the investigation, it was revealed that the banned items had been procured from Thanaram of Somanur in the district. The team along with Karumathampatti police raided a rented building at Somanur around 5pm on Tuesday and seized 1700 kg of the banned tobacco products worth Rs 7 lakh. They nabbed P Thanaram, 20, of Rajasthan. The police also seized Rs 68,050 from the house. ....
