Capital News Service A new Environmental Protection Agency mobile app will help communities track water quality at their beaches. The agency says the Web-based app will help communities and “citizen scientists” protect swimmers and other recreational users from contaminants and identify sources of pollution. To download the free app, users must request credentials from the EPA. In 2007, Michigan received an EPA grant to develop BeachGuard, a website that showcases data from 1,778 beaches where water samples are collected. Local health departments collect samples from those beaches, run lab tests to look for bacteria, compare the results with water quality standards and then determine if it’s safe for people to swim there. ....

A nearby creek flowed into the woods. Cow manure ran off into the creek, which ran into a river, which eventually ran to the Great Lakes. By Sophia Lada Capital News Service Migratory bird patterns are shifting as temperatures increase in North America, leaving birds to find new sources of food and adjust to the warmer climate, according to a new study Erin Rowan, a senior conservation associate with Chicago-based Audubon Great Lakes and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, said some birds arrive in Michigan earlier than normal because of “false springs,” a consequence of climate change. “Availability of their habitat and food and how that has played a role in when they depart their wintering grounds and arrive on their breeding grounds is shifting due to climate change,” she said. ....

They did research online about other home breweries until last summer when they opened Mi Element, a microbrewery, bakery and coffee shop in Midland, Michigan. Tony Sutorik, the owner and operator, said Mi Element has a one-barrel brewing system that brews beer and uses the leftover grain from the process to create flour that is later used in the cafe’s baked goods. ....
