'Bulgaria interim government must prioritise media freedom'


Six media associations have written to Bulgaria’s caretaker government to urge it to prioritise the improvement of media freedom in the country and the investigation of serious threats and attacks on journalists.
Addressed to caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Yanev, Interior Minister Boiko Rashkov and Culture Minister Velislav Minekov, the letter, announced on June 9, was signed by the Association of European Journalists Bulgaria, Article 19, the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, Free Press Unlimited, International Press Institute and OBC Transeuropa.
The letter was coordinated by the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), a Europe-wide mechanism which tracks, monitors and responds to violations of press and media freedom in EU member states and candidate countries. ....

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Boyko Rashkov confirmed late on Thursday to BTA the information that politicians had been wiretapped by two services – State Agency Technical Operations (DATO) and DANS. According to Rashkov, materials are currently being destroyed at the State Agency for National Security (DANS). Among those wiretapped around the elections on April 4 was caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Yanev, the interior minister told bTV.

Bulgaria's supreme court acquits former defence minister in MiG case


Bulgaria’s Supreme Court of Cassation, in a ruling on May 10, acquitted former defence minister Nikolai Nenchev on charges related to non-fulfilment of contracts with Russian company RSK MiG regarding repairs to and delivery of spare part for Bulgarian Air Force MiG-29 fighter aircraft.
The Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office lodged charges in November 2016 and January 2017 against Nenchev, who held the defence portfolio in Boiko Borissov’s second government as part of the Reformist Bloc minority partner in that government.
In office, Nenchev redirected MiG-29 engine overhaul business from the Russian company to Poland, arguing at the time that this was more cost-effective and in line with Nato policy to curtail Russia’s influence. The move caused considerable annoyance on the part of the Kremlin. ....
