ELA Expected To Be At 50% Capacity This Sumer

The Experimental Lakes Area, west of Vermilion Bay, will embark on a new study put on hold for the past year because of COVID-19.
Executive Director Matt McCandless says they’ll be moving ahead with a much publicized project to ensure our lakes and rivers remain clean and safe.
“We’ll be looking at how wetland plants can actually be used to clean up oil that might spill. So we’re are excited to have that project back up and running this year.”
McCandless expects to have about 30 people working at ELA this summer, about 50% capacity.
He notes last year they had about 12 because of the pandemic. ....

ELA Continues Research During COVID

The Experimental Lakes Area near Kenora will be capped at around half its usual occupancy this summer.
That’s because of COVID-19 health restrictions.
Despite that, Executive Director Matt McCandless says the research area will still be open and conducting experiments.
He says they are starting a couple of studies, including what happens to microplastics over time.
“That’s why we’re going to basically be adding an enclosure in a lake to actually look what is happening to the ecosystem once these microplastics are there,” explains McCandless. “How does it change? How do plants and animals live?” ....

Dave was born in Fargo, North Dakota, on 3 August 1940 but raised near Barnesville, Minnesota. He enrolled in an engineering physics program at North Dakota State University in 1958, but a chance reading of Charles Elton s book
The Ecology of Invasions by Animals and Plants during a summer biology internship changed his life forever. Switching majors, he earned his bachelor s degree in zoology in 1962. He then pursued his PhD in ecology with Elton as a Rhodes scholar at the University of Oxford, studying energy relations in aquatic food chains. Just 2 yea ....

IISD-ELA gets FedNor funds to build tourism centre

The IISD-Experimental Lakes Area is slated to get a funding boost from Ottawa to construct a new science and tourism centre at the field station east of Kenora.
The centre will be designed with visitors and students in mind, senior director with IISD-ELA Matthew McCandless said during a virtual announcement Thursday. It will include classrooms and seminar rooms, a dining hall, reception and gallery as well as accommodations.

IISD-ELA received $180,000 in funds from FedNor, which will allow the organization to get design and blueprints done with a goal of having the project “shovel ready” by the fall, McCandless said. The funding comes from FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program. ....
