The COVID-19 pandemic postponed this research last year.
This summer, armed with more knowledge about how to work safely, a team will return to the field to take on both projects.
The ELA – a group of 58 lakes and watersheds east of Kenora – has been described as the world s largest freshwater laboratory.
It s managed by the Winnipeg-based International Institute for Sustainable Development.
Lakehead University is one of the partners working with the IISD-ELA to investigate what happens to fish and other aquatic organisms when microplastics enter the water.

THUNDER BAY – The COVID-19 pandemic may have set back key projects at one of Canada’s most influential research facilities, but scientists at the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) are counting their blessings as they look back at 2020.
Operated by the Winnipeg-based International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the ELA encompasses 58 lakes in a remote stretch of northwestern Ontario about 50 kilometres east of Kenora. ....

ELA to carry on winter research despite COVID-19

The Experimental Lakes Area (ELA), located east of Kenora, Ont., is preparing for its winter season, this, despite the impact COVID-19 has had on their research.
Pauline Gerrard, the Deputy Director of the International Institute for Sustainable Development, said the ELA has been collecting data on study lakes since 1968.
The ELA hired same number of summer students as were hired in previous years (19); the difference was the vast majority did not visit the site and had their work reassigned, so they could work at home. This included working on existing data and communications projects. ....
