The coronavirus pandemic and a rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans have significantly impacted the economies and cultural fabric of Chinatowns around the country, and are gravely harming the vitality of some of them, though rallying efforts are underway.
While racism is nothing new for Asian Americans, who have historically been the victims of the racialization of disease in the U.S., the length and intensity of this pandemic has fueled an economic disaster that is increasingly posing an existential threat to Asian American Pacific Islander neighborhoods. 
Occurring parallel to a pandemic that has claimed 582,296 lives in the U.S., according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, the pandemic itself has disproportionately impacted Asian Americans in San Francisco, with the demographic accounting for 13.7% of the cases but also 52% of the de ....

For decades, the cavernous upstairs dining room at Jing Fong has been an institution in Manhattan’s Chinatown. On weekend mornings, it’s typically packed with customers, a symphony of lively chatter, the clatter of dishes, and the squeaky wheels of dim sum carts rolling from table to table. Over the summer, Connie Lai was having dinner with her dad Shu Cheung Lai, the owner of Go Believe Bakery in Manhattan s Chinatown. The bakery had closed in the spring due to the pandemic, and sales were still down 75%. 
Are you doing anything to market the business? she asked him.
Not really, he responded.
So she revived the bakery s Instagram account she started and began posting photos of buns and mooncakes, and then jumped in to research potential online delivery services. Lai, who works in the tech industry, said she had never been involved in her dad’s business before, but wanted to find ways to help.  ....
