'We Are The University': Students, Faculty Protest in Solidarity With Sexual Assault Survivors |

On a rainy Friday afternoon, chants of No more emails! No more show! âBoys will be boysâ has got to go! rang out on the UA campus.
Around 50 UA students and community members gathered on the grassy hill in front of the John Tyson Center for Excellence in Poultry Science to stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault, before lining the street to face the Administration Building.
The protest came a day after confusion and outrage erupted online over a $20,000 settlement paid by the UofA to a former student. The student had accused the university of mishandling a 2017 sexual assault allegation against him after a Title IX panel found him responsible for the assault. It also followed an email sent Feb. 17 that ignited conversations on campus about victim blaming. The email suggested avoiding leaving doors unlocked, and practicing caution when out alone at night or after consuming alcohol. It did not mention consent. ....

University of Arkansas Maintains Wrongful Fulbright Presence

TheÂ Arkansas Traveler published my column addressing the Universityâs need to remove the late Senator James William Fulbrightâs name and image from campus. Although Sen. Fulbright championed student exchange programs, he was an avid segregationist â a visionary for segregated classrooms, dormitories and dining halls.Â
This summer, many Black UA students called for the removal of Fulbrightâs statue from Old Main and his name from the College of Arts and Sciences. In July, the UA administration organized a committee of students and faculty to recommend whether the university should retain or remove the Fulbright name and statue.Â ....

Feeding America announces diversity initiative

Feeding America, KenÂtuckyâs Heartland announced Thursday a new diversity initiative to better assist underserved minority and rural communities in the food bankâs 42-county service area.
According to a news release from the organization, the initiative is paid for through a Phase 3 Grant from Feeding America National Organization.
âWhile we strive to provide food for all people in our service area facing hunger, regardless of ethnicity, gender or age, our goal is to make a concerted effort to better reach out to those underserved minority and rural communities that may hesitate to ask for help because of a lack of communication and trust,â said Jamie Sizemore, Feeding AmerÂica, Kentuckyâs Heartland executive director, in the release. ....

The holiday honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. carries with it a load of convoluted messaging. When his words are taken out of context, they hold the potential to be a tool for complicity in acts of violence and discriminationÂ â which take a heavy toll even now, 50 years after Dr. Kingâs assassination.
After one of the toughest years of his life, Christopher Jemison, a junior, used the day to reflect on the way we interpret Dr. Kingâs teachings of love, kindness and acceptance. He has heard countless iterations of those words in his lifetime.
While kindness holds a lot of meaning to Jemison, and while love has brought him out of hard times, he thinks it is important to remember that these messages have not driven away the injustices that black Americans face. Jemisonâs grandparents struggled and fought during Dr. Kingâs time, and their fight is still a fight, he said. ....

Optometrist joins Harvard Street Health Center

Dr. Angela Abraham has joined Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center as its new Director of Optometry. The expansion of Harvard Street’s services to include a full-service optometry department is important to building its comprehensive patient-focused medical facility, according to president and CEO Stan McLaren.
“Patients are now able to complete their medical appointments and go directly to our optometry department for eye exams. They can also order their glasses, for complete one stop shopping,” McLaren said.
Dr. Abraham previously served as the Director of Eye and Vision Services at The Dimock Center, a New England College of Optometry (NECO) affiliated clinic. While there, she was also an assistant clinical professor that trained future optometry students. Prior to that, Dr. Abraham was in private practice in South Carolina. ....
