The U.N. human rights office is calling for more international pressure against Myanmar’s military junta, which it says has continued a brutal crackdown on opponents despite a recent agreement to halt violence and begin dialogue.
Credible sources report at least 782 people have been killed since Myanmar’s military authorities seized control of the country on February 1 and ousted its democratically elected leaders.
The U.N. Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights says the military shows no sign of easing its crackdown on opponents, who remain defiant and continue to protest against the coup leaders. ....

About two dozen demonstrators wore black on Saturday outside Saskatoon City Hall to mark the three-month mark of the Myanmar military junta seizing power in that country.
The junta took power away from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi on Feb. 1 in Myanmar, also known as Burma.
We are very angry at them because of the brutality and the cracking down (on protesters), said Khin Htay Yin, one of the organizers with the Saskatoon Myanmar community. They are killing, even using RPG, rocket propelled grenades and bombs. It s a really cruel. ....

It has been over a month since a military coup overthrew Myanmar’s democratic government and the violence appears to be escalating.
Myanmar’s citizens have been staging mass protests, but recently the military government has been cracking down with increasingly deadly force against them. The violence has claimed the lives of over 30 people in this past week alone.

A group of Bay Area residents, called Free Burma Action Committee, came together shortly after the news of the coup broke over a month ago, and has been working to raise awareness about the ongoing violence in Myanmar.
