WSU scientists are inspecting honey bee hives to develop a better way to measure colony health and make beekeeping decisions.

Millions of honey bees trek across America each year, pollinating almonds, apples, melons, and many more crops.
Trucked in great stacks of hives, bee colonies are dispersed across hundreds of miles. It’s very difficult for beekeepers to track the impact from pests, diseases, pesticides, and environmental factors at every location.
This spring, scientists at Washington State University are following the journey and inspecting hives to get a clearer picture of colony health across the annual cycle of pollination. ....

Members of WSU Extension’s Department of Governmental Studies and Services are helping lead a partnership for remote worker training statewide.

A new, statewide remote worker certification program launched by Washington State University Extension is helping rural Washington residents seize opportunities in an increasingly digital workplace.
Created in partnership with Northwest businesses, technology groups, and employment agencies, the online course was developed to provide unemployed and underemployed workers with skills for success in the COVID-19 and post-pandemic era.

Christmas tree lovers and tree growers across the U.S. could one day admire new varieties that look great, hold up for weeks in the home, and stand up to a deadly disease that kills popular firs, thanks to globe-trotting research by Washington State University scientist Gary Chastagner.
Known as “Dr. Christmas Tree” to growers for his 40 years of research at WSU, the plant pathologist’s work on holiday trees has encompassed disease management, needle retention, variety improvement, and care of cut trees in the home, along with research into other valuable ornamental crops, including bulbs and cut flowers. ....
