Former deputy council leader Cllr Mike Hannon (LAB – Orford), who was elected in 1983, is standing down at next week’s election. The politician was involved in the peace process following the Warrington bombings in 1993. The second IRA attack took place in the town centre in March 1993, with 12-year-old Tim Parry and three-year-old Johnathan Ball tragically losing their lives. Cllr Hannon, 68, was left devastated after hearing the news. But he has hailed the work of the Peace Centre, which was set up after the bombings. ....

The Labour-run council’s medium-term financial plan, revenue budget and capital programme was passed by councillors in a vote during the virtual full council meeting today, Monday. But the Liberal Democrat opposition group voted against it, along with Conservative Cllr Kath Buckley and independent Cllr Geoff Fellows. The 4.98 per cent rise includes a three per cent adult social care precept. It will see the average Band D household be charged £1,863.16 for the year. ....

Warrington Borough Council’s cabinet is set to back the 2021-22 medium-term financial plan, draft revenue budget and capital programme during its virtual meeting next Monday. The proposed budget totals £150.17 million. As revealed by the Warrington Guardian last month, council tax is planned to rise by 4.98 per cent. This would include a three per cent adult social care precept. It would mean the average Band D household would be charged £1,863.16 for the year. These charges would be made up of £1,567.67 from the borough council, £214.63 from Cheshire Police Authority and £80.86 from Cheshire Fire Authority. ....
Amount of tax residents pay for policing and fire services set to increase THE amount of tax residents pay to fund Cheshire’s police and fire services is set to increase. Crime commissioner David Keane has announced that the police precept is set to increase by £1.25 per month in the county. Meanwhile, the portion of council tax used to fund Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is set to increase by nearly two per cent – taking the cost per year to £80.87 for a band D property, up from £79.29. Mr Keane said: “2020 was one of the most challenging years in living memory, and I know that many of us are anxious about the future. ....
