Labour MP Charlotte Nichols LABOUR S Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols says it is ‘too early’ to draw any major conclusions from the council elections after her party’s Town Hall majority was cut. The Conservatives made big gains at the ballot box as Labour retained control of the council despite losing seven seats – including a number of high-profile casualties. Both of the town’s MPs, who won their seats in the 2019 general election, were at the borough council election count on Saturday. Ms Nichols said: “Disappointingly, we lost the Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft ward.

Cllr Mike Hannon TWO of Warrington’s longest-serving councillors are preparing to wave goodbye to the Town Hall. Former deputy council leader Cllr Mike Hannon (LAB – Orford), who was elected in 1983, is standing down at next week’s election. The politician was involved in the peace process following the Warrington bombings in 1993. The second IRA attack took place in the town centre in March 1993, with 12-year-old Tim Parry and three-year-old Johnathan Ball tragically losing their lives. Cllr Hannon, 68, was left devastated after hearing the news. But he has hailed the work of the Peace Centre, which was set up after the bombings.

Warrington town centre CURRENT developments in the town will not be able to ‘rescued’ with urban greening in time. In December, the council’s cabinet agreed that tenure research should be commissioned for the town centre and agreed that urban greening should be considered with future developments in the heart of the borough. A paper on tenure research will be taken to the next available capital investment planning group in relation to the costs of carrying out the work – which is estimated at up to £50,000. During the virtual supporting the local economy policy committee meeting on Wednesday, Cllr Tom Jennings, cabinet member for economic development and innovation, hailed the plans.
