Being dotty is defined variously as mentally unbalanced, ridiculous, absurd or amusingly eccentric. But another meaning could also be added after the appreciative explosion on social media following Nasa scientist Dr Swati Mohan’s appearance last week calmly announcing the landing of the Mars rover Perseverance with a tiny but distinct bindi between her brows.
Being dotty or bindy could become an American variation of that quintessentially Indian state of being: bindaas, or confidently carefree. Particularly since another photograph of her from a different angle subsequently revealed that the young aerospace engineer had also dyed locks of her tied-back long hair in a fetching shade of blue in honour of ....

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) -As the Mars Rover Perseverance landed, the cheers in NASA Control could be heard around the world. But others just as jubilant were employees at Lonza, the local specialty chemical plant which makes hydrazine which is required for the mission.
Plant manager Mark Kern says they’ve been producing hydrazine for more than sixty years.
“Whether it was missions to the moon or satellites in space, or back in the day even launching rockets into space, the Lake Charles plant has been a part of that as the sole producer in the U.S. of hydrazine propellants,” said Kern. ....

Indian American Vishnu Sridhar Helped Engineer Mars Rover 'Perseverance' | Global Indian


A native of Queens, New York, Indian American Vishnu Sridhar was part of the team that helped engineer the Mars rover, Perseverance.
While growing up in Rego Park, Queens, Sridhar was awed at the airplanes that would take off from nearby LaGuardia airport, a Gothamist report said.
As a high-school student, he sent a weather balloon up 100,000 feet and got a taste of the vastness of space—so much left unexplored, unseen by human eyes. His grandfather, a civil engineer who built trains and dams in India, also inspired him, according to the Feb. 18 report.
“One of the key events that sparked my interest in space and exploration was watching National Geographic. The Carl Sagan TV show ‘Cosmos’, too—that really sparked my interest in human exploration and exploring our solar system,” Sridhar said in the report. ....
