Caring Chetwynde pupil Thomas Machell grows his hair in memory of friend

A SELFLESS year two pupil has grown out his luscious blonde locks in memory of a special friend who sadly passed away.
Thomas Machell, 6, a pupil at Chetwynde Primary School in Barrow sadly lost his close friend in 2018, inspiring a fundraising campaign to raise money for The National Society for Epilepsy.
The youngster is collecting donations as he prepares to have his hair cut off in June, when he will also donate his hair to the Little Princess Trust.
Mum Salli Kidson, 30, a receptionist, said: He saw a charity hair cut on Children in Need and asked why they were cutting their hair off that little girl, so I told him they are donating the hair to children who have got cancer and things like that. He asked if a boy can do that, and decided at the age of four that he was going to grow his hair and eventually cut it off for charity. ....

Sappho, of course, is the ancient Greek lyric poet whose charged words turned her name and homeland into adjectives for forbidden love.
And it was Barnard, a Vancouver, Wash., native and Reed College graduate, who finally gave those words life in the English language, in the process remaking both the work and how it was popularly viewed.
Her “Sappho: A New Translation,” published in 1958, was a “big deal, because it was so beautiful,” Sappho scholar Diane Rayor says. “It brought Sappho to people who never would have read her, in this handy little affordable book. It allowed people to fall in love with Sappho.” ....

A dedicated and energetic town councillor has died, days after attending a council meeting from her hospital bed.
Sue Barnard passed away on Tuesday, February 2, at the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston, eight years after being given 12 months to live after battling cancer.
She represented the Gunton ward since Lowestoft Town Council was formed in 2017, and retained her seat in the local elections in May 2019.
