This Southern Gothic comedy comes from the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who brought Crimes of the Heart to the stage. Review for The Miss Firecracker Contest: Its heroine, Carnelle, is an irrepressible young woman who thinks that winning the local beauty contest, held annually on the Fourth of July, will restore her soiled reputation and make her somebody in her small Mississippi community. The family and friends who help her along the way are a dysfunctional bunch who tackle life in their own peculiar ways. The path to victory might get a bit bumpy, but no one will ever be the same after the Miss Firecracker Contest.

editorial@newsandsentinel.com PARKERSBURG “The Miss Firecracker Contest” will be presented by the Actors Guild of Parkersburg at 8 p.m. May 21, 22, 28 and 29, and 2:30 p.m. on May 23 and 30. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Guild website at www.actors-guild.com. The comedy is set in 1974 in Brookhaven, Miss., and was written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Beth Henley. The play is about Carnelle who desperately wants to be named Miss Firecracker at her town’s Fourth of July Carnival. The title is very important to her and this summer’s pageant is her last chance as her age will not allow her to compete again.

New York Stage and Film Commits $100,000 to Support Artists with NEXUS Initiative New York Stage and Film, considered “one of the preeminent incubators for theater in the country,” has committed $100,000 to their new NEXUS Initiative that brings together 20 multi-hyphenate artists to explore the question “where does story exist at the intersection of stage and film?” Through this inaugural program, NYSAF will offer direct support to these artists – each participant receives $5,000 and will take part in a series of conversations focused on the needs of new and expanded forms of storytelling that resonate with our time. In order to increase access to the program and respond to the ideas of a broad range of storytellers, these 20 participants were recommended by 14 leading artists of stage and film for their accomplishments in exploring new forms of storytelling.
