Hundreds of Graduates Walk Across the Stage in Selma

It’s Graduation Day today in the city of Selma.
Hundreds of graduates will walk across the stage and get a diploma –an achievement that will carry them into the future that stands before them.
Wallace Community College Selma held a traditional in-person graduation to celebrate it’s Class of 2021.
“This is a special day for those students,” Johnny Moss, III.
“They worked so hard. So we wanted to reward them.”
The ceremony was held outside to allow more distance between people in the audience. A jumbo-tron screen and a huge sound system was set up in the school parking lot. ....

Selma student Chloe Mendoza going to Stanford

SELMA â Selma High School student Chloe Mendozaâs admission to Stanford University comes as little surprise to the people who know her best. In fact, it runs in the family for the daughters of Steve and Sonya Mendoza.
With her two older sisters having gone to Harvard and UCLA, Chloe was given the opportunity to go to Yale. When Stanford opened up with an opportunity and a scholarship, Mendoza says it took her by surprise, but she was glad for it.
âIt felt almost like a coming-of-age movie for me where Iâm deciding my future in a really dramatic moment,â Mendoza said. âBut choosing Stanford was a plot twist for me because I was planning to go to Yale.â ....

Alice Glenn was born in Selma, Ca. on September 28, 1924, to Manoog and Mary Sahagian. She grew up with her sister and brothers on a farm her parents had purchased after they left Armenia in the early 1900 s and immigrated to America. There, along with many other families and friends, they built a strong community that believed in hard work and supported each other to achieve the American Dream.
Alice attended schools in Selma and graduated from Selma High School in 1942. In 1949, she met and married her husband Jessie Glenn and had one daughter, Linda. After becoming a single mom a few years later, she returned to the family farm to live with her mom and brother where she lived for most of her life. She worked summers at Eknoian Packing, Libby s cannery, and in 1972 she began working at National Raisin in Fowler until her retirement. ....

SELMA, Ala. (WSFA) - The City of Selma had a sweet surprise in store for legendary basketball coach Willie Maxey over the weekend.
The community held âMay for Maxeyâ to celebrate Maxeyâs time coaching at Selma High School. Friends, family and community members gathered at the school to honor Maxey with a DJ and drive by celebration. ....
