City moves toward renaming street after former mayor

The vote is expected to be finalized at a Tuesday meeting.
The Monday session briefly opened up to public comment — besides the press, no one was in attendance.
At the end of 2020, then incoming Mayor Matthew B. Perkins announced the name of the street would be changed, in honor of the former Mayor Gilmore, who served in the role multiple times over the years. After the meeting, Perkins said placement of the street name holds a lot of meaning in Gilmore’s career in public service.
“He went to Washington so many times to lobby for the federal funds to redo River Front Park,” Perkins said. “It’s been 20 years and we see people down there every day enjoying it. It was a field a grass before his efforts.” ....

City moving closer to 'normal': Amid packed meeting hall, commission giddy with current status | News

ASHLAND The viewing gallery was packed Thursday at the Ashland City Commission, a bellwether of a return to (almost) normal.
In fact, the seating chart for the commission revealed that the city is beginning to see the dark days of COVID pass, as the full commission, plus the city manager, attorney and clerk were seated on the bench, as in the days before the pandemic.
The commissioners and mayor were gushing about last week’s First Friday, with Commissioner Marty Gute stating the turnout was “very encouraging.” Commissioner Cheryl Spriggs paid compliment to Holly Stone, the new Ashland in Motion director. Commissioner Amanda Clark said the event wasn’t possible without the city staff. ....

Ashland City Commission: Out with the old, in with the new

ASHLAND In a whirlwind meeting Thursday detailing big moves in downtown Ashland, the city commission said it is looking into tearing down the old Ashland Oil building to make way for a convention center in the city’s core.
While traffic was the biggest topic of the meeting, the plans for the property played a strong second fiddle.
The job has been on the docket since 2013, when plans were drawn up to turn the blighted property into an attraction — Commissioner Cheryl Spriggs said a convention center is “a part of the jigsaw puzzle for our downtown.”
Located at 1401 Winchester Avenue, the plan is part of an overall push that Mayor Matthew B. Perkins said is to renovate the downtown. In addition to making way for the convention center, which would be across the street from the Delta Hotel, Perkins said tearing down the building is important due to public safety. ....
