Oversight hearing on Holyoke Soldiers’ Home canceled as state official rescinds offer to testify

In a surprise move, the chief of staff for the past two secretaries of the state Department of Veterans Services bailed out of his planned testimony Tuesday afternoon before a legislative oversight committee on the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home.
Paul Moran, chief of staff for Secretary Cheryl Lussier Poppe and her predecessor, Francisco Ureña, was the sole person scheduled to testify so, the hearing was canceled, according to staff for state Rep. Linda Dean Campbell and state Sen. Michael Rush.
“The hearing of the Special Committee on the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke COVID-19 Outbreak scheduled for April 13, 2021 has been canceled. Department of Veterans’ Services Chief of Staff Paul Moran was scheduled to testify but has withdrawn his participation,” the lawmakers announced. ....

Idaho veterans home administrator Rick Holloway is trustees’ pick for Holyoke Soldiers’ Home superintendent

HOLYOKE Pending a final nod by Gov. Charlie Baker, Rick Holloway, administrator for a state veterans home in Boise, Idaho, will head east as the new superintendent of the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke.
Holloway prevailed over another finalist, Robert Engell, a Longmeadow resident and administrator of the Overlook Masonic Health Care Center in Charlton. Members of the selection committee agreed both candidates were qualified, but more than one said they saw Holloway as the more “transformational” of the two.
“Clearly Rick Holloway is head and shoulders above any other candidate . based, in part, on the pure depth of the answers he provided,” said Brig. Gen. Sean T. Collins, one of seven trustees of the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. ....

Governor Baker Signs Executive Order to Support Military Families Transferring to Massachusetts


BOSTON Governor Charlie Baker renewed the Baker-Polito Administration’s commitment to support military families transferring to Massachusetts military installations. The Executive Order signed by Governor Baker directs the Division of Professional Licensure (DPL) to improve license portability for military personnel and their spouses so that they can continue their civilian careers and provide for their families without interruption. 
“This order makes the process of transferring professional licenses simpler for military personnel and their spouses arriving in Massachusetts,”
said Governor Baker. “I want to thank the Department of Defense and the Air Force for their leadership on this important issue and I look forward to finding new ways to help the members of the Armed Forces across all branches and their families as they start the next chapter of their lives in the Commonwealth.” ....

HOLYOKE Infection control policies, set staffing schedules and protocols for staff training are among measures aimed at improving conditions at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke, hard hit by a COVID-19 outbreak last spring.
In a meeting of a special joint oversight committee of the Legislature on Thursday, Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders told lawmakers that interim Soldiers’ Home Superintendent Val Liptak and the team on site are taking a series of steps to make sure that conditions that contributed to the deaths of 77 veteran residents never recur again. ....
