Press Release Senate oks 7 bills renaming, converting schools The Senate today adopted on third and final reading seven local bills that seek to rename State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) as well as convert state colleges into state universities. Senator Joel Villanueva, chair of the Committee on Higher and Technical-Vocational Education, expressed his gratitude to the body for the swift passage of the seven bills, saying these measures would uplift the academic communities in the various SUCs. The passage on third reading of these local bills renaming our SUCs and converting colleges into state universities in the middle of the pandemic is timely, relevant and also uplifting to the communities who will stand to benefit from these developments. This is definitely a good news for our people in Abra Agusan del Sur, Basilan, Camarines Sur, Davao de Oro, Occidental Mindoro, and Surigao del Sur, Villanueva said. ....

BSP Governor Benjamin E. Diokno is dismayed that the Philippines holds the distinction as the only central bank to be restricted by a bank secrecy law (Republic Act No. 1405, also known as “The Secrecy of Bank Deposits Law) after Lebanon lifted its own bank secrecy law in May last year, in the middle of the pandemic. ....
USD’s Student Government Association (SGA) discussed exempting some budget allocations for the Tiospaye Student Council, a Native American student group on campus, in order for the student organization to properly award dancers at their annual Wacipi, the largest cultural event at USD. Wacipi is a word loosely meaning “they dance,” and is similar to a Powwow. The event has hosted over 2,000 people and 300 dancers in the past. Tiospaye’s President Julianna Benge, Secretary Nick Kennedy and Vice President Tylar Larsen attended SGA representing the student organization. Dancers come from all over the state and nation to attend the Wacipi and dance. Dancers are compensated and awarded with money allocated by SGA, which is typically spent on food and travel expenses. Not all dancers are awarded. ....
