Congress pressed on legislation to enhance enforcement of environmental laws

Congress has been asked to pass immediately the proposed legislation on the creation of the Environmental Protection and Enforcement Bureau (EPEB) to strengthen the enforcement of the country’s environmental laws.
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said the importance of the legislation was tackled during the 4th National Environmental Law Enforcement Summit held last July 14 to 16.
It said the National Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee – Subcommittee on Environment and Natural Resources (NALECC-SCENR) and other participating agencies signed Joint Resolution No. 02 Series of 2021.
It pointed out that the resolution tackled the inability of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to properly perform environmental protection and enforcement. ....

DOST-PNRI welcomes House panel's passage of bill creating atomic commission – Manila Bulletin

“The Committee recently approved the substitute bill for the Comprehensive Atomic Regulation Act, consolidating 13 House bills in support of the measure,” it said in a statement on Friday, May 28.
The substitute bill was approved by the House panel, chaired by ACT-CIS partylist Rep. Eric Go Yap during its meeting on May 12.

The DOST-PNRI noted that during the panel meeting, DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña rallied behind the creation of an independent regulatory body consistent with international standards.
“Among the key provisions of the bill is the proposed creation of the Philippine Atomic Regulatory Commission (PARC) which will be charged with the regulation of all activities and facilities involving sources of ionizing radiation,” it said. ....

Even with just a year left in office, the creation of a Department of Overseas Filipinos (DOFIL) that aims to address the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) remained a top priority of the Duterte administration, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said.

Nograles made the statement during a joint hearing of the Senate committees on Labor, Employment, and Human Resources Development; Foreign Relations; Civil Service, Government Reorganization, and Professional Regulation; and Finance on the proposed measure this week.
According to Nograles, the creation of the DOFIL was important because it aimed to merge the functions and mandates of various offices and bureaus that address the concerns of OFWs and Filipinos abroad. ....
