Mandating third-party code reviews: Developers, cyber experts skeptical

The cybersecurity executive order issued by President Joe Biden in May covered a lot of ground, moving the needle on issues like breach reporting, zero trust architecture, and software insecurity.
One part of the order requires the director of the National Institute for Standards and Technology and director of the NSA to publish minimum standards for how vendors doing business with the government test their source code for security vulnerabilities or dependencies on other software applications or interfaces that may introduce risk. ....

New report finds 67% of applications in the utility sector have serious vulnerabilities

With the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack still making headlines and resulting in new government policy, a new report from application security provider WhiteHat Security Inc. finds that companies across multiple industries remain exposed to future attacks.
WhiteHat’s monthly Appsec Stats Flash report released today found that the Window of Exposure, a key metric indicative of breach exposure for applications, has increased from 55% to 67% in the utility sector since the start of the year. The figure makes applications in the utility sector the second most vulnerable to attacks behind public administration applications. ....

Industry Reactions to Ransomware Attack on Colonial Pipeline

Colonial Pipeline, the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, last week revealed that it was forced to shut down operations after being hit by a piece of ransomware.
The attack, which involved the Darkside ransomware, had significant implications, including states declaring a state of emergency, temporary gas shortages caused by panicked motorists stocking up over fears of gas shortages caused by the hack, and gas prices rising.
Darkside has been linked to Russia, but the hackers said they only wanted to make a profit and denied any government ties. The Russian government has officially denied any involvement, but U.S. President Joe Biden said Moscow does have “some responsibility to deal with this.” ....

Security researchers applaud Google's move towards multi-factor authentication

Google took an important step on Thursday by saying that “very soon” they will automatically enroll users in multifactor authentication – what they are calling two-step verification (2SV) – a move security researchers say is a step in the right direction.
Google made the announcement on World Password Day, in which Mark Risher, Google’s director of product management, identity and user security, pointed out in a blog that 66% of Americans admit to using the same password across multiple sites, which makes all those accounts vulnerable if any one fails. ....
