WORCESTER The Canal District rolled out the red carpet five years ago when the neighborhood initiated a drive that overwhelmed the team with 10,000 postcards. This week, the Worcester Red Sox finally arrived to play the team s first game at Polar Park in the heart of the Canal District, and businesses there are beyond thrilled to welcome the new hometown team. WooSox banners are hanging throughout the neighborhood, shops are promoting opening day events and restaurants are planning game-day specials. As a firefighter in Chicago, Moriconi traveled nearly 1,000 miles east in December of 1999 after six Worcester firefighters lost their lives in the Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse Co. blaze. Photos from the event show Moriconi standing on the stage as part of the honor guard in the ceremony at the then-Worcester Centrum that honored the six fallen heroes.
