The Celebrity Edge cruise ship is docked at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Celebrity Edge is set to sail Saturday and become the first cruise ship to leave a US port with ticketed passengers since the onset of the pandemic last year.
It s been a long circuitous journey to restarting cruise travel in the United States.
But more than 15 months after the pandemic halted the industry, the first big cruise ship has sail out of a US port on Saturday. ....

It’s anchors aweigh and full steam ahead for the Celebrity Edge.
On Saturday, the cruise ship, owned by the Royal Caribbean Group, will become the first to sail from a U.S. port since the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention brought the industry to a halt more than 15 months ago with a no-sail order that was ultimately extended a number of times. It is scheduled to sail from Fort Lauderdale on a seven-night trip that will take it around the Caribbean, with ports of call in Mexico and the Bahamas. ....

The world’s cruise ships were once titans of the oceans, raking in billions in profit as their city-sized passenger populations traveled across the globe.
But last year, many of these floating palaces became coronavirus epicenters, turned away from port after port as Covid cases rose on board and the pandemic escalated on land.
First passengers, and then crew members, struggled to get home. By summer 2020, the world’s cruise ship fleet was essentially out-of-action. Most vessels were laid up, and some were sold off for scrap as the industry struggled to survive financially.
Now, the first cruise ship carrying fare-paying passengers to depart US shores in over a year has set sail. ....
